Summer is here and what better time to focus on JOY! I know many of us have fond memories of fun summers – long and lazy days full of good times and little responsibilities. Sometimes it is good to focus on good memories from the past and re-experience those happy moments, even if it is just in your mind.
To begin, what is the difference between happiness and joy? Happiness is typically linked to more external events, and is often times temporary. Joy on the other hand, is a deeper, more enduring state of contentment and satisfaction, coming within yourself.
So if joy is more internal and not necessarily dependent on what is actually going on around you, how do you go about finding more joy? A lot can circle back to what your core values are and what brings about satisfaction and feelings of content. Think about what your foundational beliefs are and what brings you hope. For many this is built on your spiritual beliefs and practices. What do you believe about life and love and your purpose on earth?
From a more practical standpoint, joy often is found from slowing down and being mindful. This often brings about gratitude, which brings about feelings of good. Taking time to spend in nature and being present with those around you are also great ways to feel more joy. When we hurry through life or just “get through the day” we miss out on so much that the day has to offer. When we are distracted by our phones and our to-do lists and only half-listen to our loved ones we are taking away from moments that are meaningful.
Another great exercise is to recall some of your greatest joys in your life. Sit down, take a few breaths and immerse yourself back in that very moment. Remember as much detail as you can of that particular time. Recall what was going through your mind; what your body felt. Stay there for a few moments and feel it over again. Come back to those moments when you are feeling down.
Whether you spend time this month exploring your beliefs and values, take a few small steps to being more mindful and present, or just immerse yourself in something FUN, we hope that you truly find some moments of JOY!
